SUGGESTIONS FOR SENIOR DOWNSIZING

For most retirees and seniors in the Hamilton Ontario area, moving from their residence into smaller accommodations can be stressful. Some seniors can encounter an emotional downsize. Here are some suggestions to downsizing.

DISCUSS IT

It could be painful to admit you are feeling overwhelmed by your move. We suggest highly that you communicate with your family and friends. This is an excellent first step to releasing stress.

DEVELOP A STRATEGY

Imagine what your new residence that you are downsizing will look like. Think about what will you need and how you want it to look. Check out if there are there space restraints. It is an excellent idea to create a timeline. Determine when specific tasks need to be completed and work to that. Writing out clear deadlines will make you feel organized. We suggest that you arrange to have your cable and internet connected the day they move in.

DOWNSIZE SEVERAL ITEMS

We advise that you go room to room with a list of items that you want to keep. Everything else you can sell, donate or dispose of.

Work with coloured Post-It stickers to mark what stays and what goes. Applying this method will make moving day an unproblematic. In the event you have not used something in a long time, you most likely won’t use it again.

PACK LIKE A PRO

We suggest using a professional packing service. This will help to keep things organized on the moving day. If you intend on doing your own move, we would suggest getting boxes, packing tape, packing paper, permanent markers and scissors ahead of time. Do not stuff every box full because it can be difficult to lift. It is good practice to illustrate the contents on the side of the box. Always remember to lift with your legs and get help for heavy items! Take photos of stuff that has to be disassembled. Use small Ziplock bags for screws and tape the bag to the furniture.

SETTLE IN

Downsizing and moving in such an organized way will make sure that unpacking is convenient. Begin with the big pieces of furniture and other large items, working your way down to the small stuff. We suggest staying hydrated and asking for help.
