Tips for Moving with Pets

Among the many, most important things to think about when moving is your children and pets. We recommend that you make the transition less difficult for your favorite pets.

Here are some suggestions when moving your pets.

Keep Pets Away

A pain-free way to keep your pet entertained and safe on moving day is to keep them with family or a friend. In case no one is available, you can also consider pet daycare centers. For those who have no options available, try to keep them in their crate in a relaxing empty room or in your garage. This can help make sure the movers are not distracted and finish off the move as quickly as possible.

Pack an Overnight bag for your pet

It is in your best interest to pack an essentials box or bag for your pet. We would suggest packing toiletries, medication, extra clothes, and more. Also include toys, food and grooming tools. Bear in mind that your pet will also have to adjust to a new environment, so a few comfort items will help them feel protected.

Drive Your Pet(s) to Your New Home

In case your move is within driving distance, it can a wise decision to transporting them yourself in your vehicle. This could give them some sense of familiarity, even when their environment is changing. It will also be much easier for you to care for them. Keep in mind that driving them can require an extra stop for a bathroom break.

Update Your Pet's Identification Information

Once your move is complete, update your pets contact information in case of an emergency. You should also notify your vet about your move so they can bring up to date their records and suggest a new vet in your neighborhood if needed.

Your pet will require plenty of time to adapt to a new home and neighborhood. Make sure to keep an eye on them so they don’t roam too far and get lost. If you have a dog(s), we recommend that you walk your pet on a leash inside your home. This will help to protect against them getting lost or trying to run away due to stress and anxiety. It's also an excellent idea to talk with your veterinarian for optimal suggestions.
