What to Expect from Professional Piano Movers?

Some people think that moving pianos is the same process for all pianos. We disagree; each piano is made differently and requires special handling to prevent damages.  An example of this is moving a grand piano. This type of piano requires an entirely different approach and specialized equipment. Moving this type of piano could require 4-6 people. Unfortunately, some general movers with no experience handling pianos could send over two movers to handle a grand piano. This is a recipe for disaster and a lawsuit.

When you hire professionals to move your baby-grand piano, this is what you should expect:
  • The piano needs to be fully wrapped, especially across the top and all around the sides.
  • The movers lift and hold around the left front corner of the piano.
  • One mover crawls under the piano to remove the bolt from that corner leg.
  • The movers lift the corner slightly off the floor.
  • The mover under the piano carefully uses a rubber mallet to bangs the leg loose from its bracket.
  • The crew splits up into two, and one group holds the legless corner up while the other group holds, the piano along the opposite side.
  • The legless corner gets lowered to the floor, and the movers on the reverse side lift up to keep the weight of the piano off the two remaining legs.
  • The left side of the piano is placed on a special piano board. This durable equipment is padded, has two metal brackets on each side for the ratchet straps, and has a raised lip on one end.
  • Next, the piano is strapped securely in place, and the remaining two legs are removed.
  • The piano is now tilted so a 4-wheeler can be placed under the piano board.
  • Then the crew keeps it steady as they start moving.

Often, the grand piano will remain on the special piano board to the new location. Some piano movers will remove the piano, set it on extra pads, and strap it tight to the inside of the truck wall. This is for an added level of security. When the piano movers arrive, the unloading crew will put it on their piano board to move it carefully it into your new home. If you are using Morrison Moving to move your piano, the great news is that our piano movers are specially trained to handle all types of pianos.

It's important when shopping around for movers to make sure you ask the right questions.  Here are a few questions to ask.

  1. How many movers will you be sending over? Expect (4-6)
  2. Do you have special piano moving equipment?
  3. Do you have the proper insurance?

We recommend that you do some cross-checking online. Read reviews, check the BBB and social media. If the company has negative reviews that have no response, proceed with extreme caution.
